Akhila and Aroon
Aroon contacted me to photograph his proposal to Akhila, and after sending me a detailed email with photos and diagrams of where the event would happen, I agreed. Fifty friends and family members were there to witness the Aroon’s proposal, but Aroon’s mother had a little something up her sleeve as well. Aroon sang in Berkeley’s Octet, and she invited them to the proposal and to serenade the couple.
Read Akhila’s own words to see why the location of the proposal and the octet are special to the couple: “UC Berkeley’s campus holds some special memories for us. On March 9th, 2013, as one of our first few dates, Aroon invited me to be his date for the 65th reunion of his old college a cappella group, The UC Men’s Octet. We spent the entire day in Berkeley, walking around the city, exploring campus and taking in the view from the Campanile. As early dates go, I was extremely nervous, which unfortunately for Aroon led to my making little eye contact and leaving few signs for him to know how the date was going. I, of course, was having a great time! After the event at night, we decided to take another stroll on campus, this time under the stars.
Aroon asked me “hey, wanna check something out?” and I found myself nodding along before knowing what I was getting into. Aroon’s always managed to bring out the spontaneity in me.He held his hand out and started leading me towards Doe Library. We took a secret path to a ledge on the library that overlooks Memorial Glade.
We carefully scaled the side of the building, and sat down for a while, huddled together as the night got cooler. We look back on having our first kiss on this ledge as one of the most romantic things we’ve ever done…under the moon and stars, on a quiet night, above the rest of the world. On July 2nd this year, as Aroon once again led me towards Doe Library, I had a hunch that we were about to ring in the next phase of our lives, back at our special spot!”
